NEWS: London Cheap Eats celebrates its 1st birthday!

DSC00776 (Large).jpg

One whole year since we launched in January 2016. Time really does fly when you're having fun. And we've certainly had a lot of that.

Almost 200 website entries later, we at London Cheap Eats are both immensely proud and supremely humbled at what we've achieved, and the great people we've been able to work with, over the past 12 months.

People have said some very lovely things about us, including Business InsiderBuzzFeed, and Evening Standard. We sold out tickets to our very first event, the London Cheap Eats £8 Pop-up. And had a pretty amazing night hosting it and meeting our fans. We've held numerous competitions for our readers, with some of our favourite cheap eats venues and traders in the industry. And we even interviewed a lot of them too.

We quickly expanded the team from the five we launched with, to include a sixth member. Then realised that still wasn't quite enough, and on-boarded a seventh pretty sharpish. KS ran a marathon to raise money for charity (and also just so he could eat more), and we supported the great cause that is the Magic Breakfast Charity with their Instagram campaign. We made any excuse to throw a party (exhibit A and exhibit B), and shared with SkyScanner readers some of the cheaper alternatives to London's fanciest restaurants

But what we're probably most proud of is you guys, our readers. Every day, we're a little in awe when we look at the large, loyal and engaged following we have somehow managed to amass through both londoncheapeats.com and our social channels; we're currently standing at (very, very nearly) 30k followers on Instagram, 2,700 followers on Twitter, 1,300 followers on Facebook, and 1,200 signed up to our newsletter.

And what that tells us is that you guys like what we do, and think it's worthwhile. And that's probably the best we could have ever hoped for. So, on behalf of the whole London Cheap Eats team, we THANK YOU, from the bottom of our hearts, for your continued support. We have exciting things lined up this year, so keep visiting the website, sending us emails, and engaging with us and the community, and we'll keep doing this for as long as you guys let us.

A big milestone warrants a big party, of course. So last night the team hit up Radio Alice, a pizzeria in Hoxton Square, named after a pirate radio station that broadcasted in the 1970s from a two-room attic in the centre of Bologna. With a name like that, who can resist. Many thanks to the fantastic team at Radio Alice for hosting our awesome pizza party, and for helping London Cheap Eats celebrate our first birthday in style.

To many more years of the best cheap eats in London!

PRESS: TWO team members featured in Evening Standard's top London foodies list

WELL. Aren't we just chuffed with our team. Firstly, for being awesome in general and doing a damn fine job of seeking out London's best cheap eats. But also, because no less than two members were featured in this Evening Standard article on the weekend: London's top 10 foodie influencers on Instagram.

Congratulations Kar-Shing and Leyla. And the London Cheap Eats Instagram account even got a nice little mention. In true team style, the whole gang hit up Malaysian joint Tuk Din in Bayswater to celebrate. But also because we just can't get enough of each other.

Editor's note: Tuk Din is a great cheap eat in its own right. Stay tuned for a write-up on their fab food.

NEWS: And we've now got a seventh team member!

Following on from last week's announcement about our newly recruited sixth team member, Ed Tan, we've now also recruited a seventh.

Everyone please say hello to - Steph Chan!

You can learn more about Steph and read her '60 seconds with' interview on her London Cheap Eats profile page.

Wonderful to have you join the gang Steph. We and the rest of London look forward to seeing all the tasty cheap eats you discover!

NEWS: We've got a sixth team member!

Thanks to the humbling success London Cheap Eats has experienced over the past few months since we launched in January, we've spent the past week or so searching London-wide for new team members to expand our number of contributors.

There are lots of corners of London we are yet to get to, and we need more talented eaters to help us do so.

We shared news of our search on our Instagram and Facebook pages, and after many applications (thank you to everyone who took the time to get in touch!), tough interview questions, and a heck of a lot of food pictures, we're thrilled to announce our sixth team member - Ed Tan!

You can learn more about Ed and read his '60 seconds with' interview on his London Cheap Eats profile page.

Great to have you on board Ed. We hope you're hungry, and we can't wait to see what cheap eats you have to share with London!

NEWS: The team celebrate 3 months of the website being live

This week marked three months of londoncheapeats.com being live - my, how time flies. During our brief existence we've surpassed 100 entries on the website, almost reached 5,000 followers on Instagram, and are continuing to bring you the city's best cheap eats for £8 or less each week. A huge thanks to all our readers for your continued support!

To celebrate, the team headed over to The Artworks in Elephant and Castle for a good graze last night. We've had our eye on this creative work hub constructed from re-purposed shipping containers for some time, noticing it was home to a few interesting and independent eateries, with the sort of price points we look for.

We won't give away too much now (expect some new entries from last night's food tour soon), but needless to say, we ate well.

Think jerk chicken with gorgeous rice n' peas from Tasty Jerk; chicken souvlaki marinated in Greek herbs with handmade pita, salad and homemade dips from The Athenian; the much-loved duck confit burger with duck fat chips from The Frenchie Bistro; and a winning flavour bomb Mauritian dish of bol renverse with chicken, shiitake mushrooms, choi sum, Mauritian sausage, sweet wine sauce and rice.

Happy 1/4 birthday London Cheap Eats 🎈

NEWS: 100th entry now up on London Cheap Eats

It's taken us almost three months of being live - and a serious slog prior to that - to reach a big milestone in the website's history, that we're all rather proud of.

Today marks our 100th London cheap eat being added to the website! It's an incredible team effort for a group of just five - a huge well done to the London Cheap Eats dream team.

Taking the crown for this landmark event is Bisi's entry of a two course Korean lunch for £7 at Bibigo in Islington, published this morning.

If someone were to eat at a couple of our recommendations each week, it would take about a year to work through our current list. But we won't be stopping there..

As ever, we will continue to explore every inch of London's budget dining scene to bring you the city's best cheap eats each week, and we hope you continue to enjoy them. To the next 100!

NEWS: MAGIC BREAKFAST CHARITY INSTAGRAM CAMPAIGN

IMG_20160125_091148.jpg

London Cheap Eats took part in an Instagram campaign this week, by sharing a picture of empty dishes to help raise awareness of the half a million children in the UK who go to school without breakfast each day.

Without a nutritious and filling start to the day, children are unable to concentrate in lessons, acting as a barrier to their education.

The Magic Breakfast charity believes there is a solution to this, but they need your help. For just 22p a day, a child can enjoy a protein-enriched bagel, porridge, low-salt and sugar cereals and fruit juice, to give them the necessary #FuelForLearning.

If you would like to show your support, please text MBBW02 £2 to 70070, which will donate £2 to Magic Breakfast so they are able to supply nine more children with a nutritious breakfast.

Thank you 🌠
