SOUTH KENSINGTON | SW7
Nestled round the corner from South Kensington tube station, this small and unassuming Chinese restaurant has long been a staple for students and visitors in the area. Whilst South Kensington itself doesn’t lack restaurants, decent cheap eats are few and far between, but Oriental Canteen hits the spot.
A plate of steamed rice with two roast meats of your choice will set you back just £5.20. I went for roast duck and pork belly, both of which were surprisingly good quality compared to my Chinatown staples. The duck was a little more fatty than others, but tender and juicy, and the pork belly had a crispy skin that was delightfully crunchy and moreish.
The portion size is a little smaller than you may find in Chinatown, but given that it comes in way below our magic £8 mark, it makes a great quick lunch, or even a pre-show meal at the Royal Albert Hall!
In addition, pretty much their whole menu comes in under £8. Another top pick is their 8 Treasure Rice, with some seriously good tofu to satisfy the vegetarians.
Throw in their addictive chilli oil and polite and quick service, and this is a solid find in South Kensington. It will even leave you with enough change to get a custard tart or ice cream from one of the nearby cafes. Note: expect to share a table when it's busy, plus they have some outside seating.
