Waterloo institution Marie's Café on Lower Marsh is ostensibly a greasy spoon.
In fact, it is a greasy spoon, at least until 5pm when it morphs into a marvellously cheap Thai BYOB restaurant that regularly has queues out of the door.
Hand your booze over to go in the fridge on your way in, and request their moreish prawn toast (£4) or prawn crackers (£2) before you've even sat down. This will keep you going whilst you decide on a curry or a stir fry, mostly priced at £5.50 (with chicken, beef, pork or vegetable) aside from a few enticing specials around the £6-7 mark; egg fried rice is another £1.80 on top. Alternatively keep things simple with a massive plate of Pad Thai noodles for £6.50.
You aren't going to go home hungry, but if you've got some room left, get a plate of fried banana fritters with ice cream and honey for just £2.90 - perfect to share between four if you want something sweet to finish. Note: cash only.
