CHINATOWN | W1D
Old Tree Bakery in Golders Green rolled out a smaller sister restaurant in Chinatown a couple of years back, serving cheap, quick and tasty Taiwanese dishes in a casual atmosphere.
The room itself feels a little crowded with sets of small wooden tables and benches, but splashes of brightly coloured tiling bring joy to the space.
From all the menu options, their selection of noodle soups come recommended and are generously portioned. From them, expect luscious and savoury broth, silky noodles, pak choi, sliced spring onion, and half a boiled egg.
To stay within our magic £8 mark, go for the Taiwanese-style stewed belly pork noodles, topped with both minced pork and sweet stewed belly, filling every part of my insides with warmth and deliciousness. If you have extra coins knocking about, you can try the real Taiwanese staple that is beef noodle soup, for about a pound or so more.
Early afternoon on a weekday and the place was empty when I first arrived, but quickly filled within half an hour. Note: they don't serve alcohol, it's cash only, and they add a 10% service charge to your bill.
