PECKHAM | SE15
Peckham strikes again. Bellenden Road is home to several superb eateries (Artusi, Begging Bowl), but only one made it into food critic Marina O'Loughlin's Top 50 UK restaurants list for The Guardian. That place is Ganapati - a South Indian kitchen run by a Brit (Claire Fisher) with comforting curries and perfect parathas.
Prices are perfectly reasonable in the evenings, but if you want to be a London Cheap Eater, you need to go along at lunch time Tuesday to Friday, when five filling dishes are on offer for either £7 or £7.50.
On a recent visit, we worked our way through a swordfish curry with tomato, coconut and tamarind masala, some cheera parippu (daal and spinach curry), and a sizeable vegetable thali.
All three came with pappadoms, rice, and various sauces and chutneys - they all work as individual meals, but you'll probably want to get sharing. It's also essential that you splash out on some of those flaky parathas (£2.50) to mop up any leftovers. Winner.
