COVENT GARDEN | WC2
Mamie's is a charming spot in Covent Garden for fresh and savoury galettes, crêpes, and excellent cider served from French boules. The cuisine hails from Brittany, where galettes and crepes are layered with fillings like cheeses and ham, and form a proper meal.
Their savoury buckwheat galettes (naturally gluten-free) are the base for their mains, which start from just £6.90. I went for the complète: Emmental, ham, and egg for £6.90, then added mushrooms for 50p. The galette arrived with a lovely thin base and crisped edges - a perfect medium for the stringy, buttery Emmental, and salty ham and mushrooms. Other options include goats cheese with honey (£6.50) or a rolled sausage galette with onions, mustard and green leaves (£7.90).
Many toppings can be added for an extra 50p, and you can even change the base from a galette to a crepe for +£1 or so. Mamies resembles a compact multi-level house and ordering is done via iPads, where you can send requests to the kitchen at your convenience. It's worth making a reservation if you plan to visit on a weekend, when they're particularly busy.
