EUSTON | NW1
I haven’t seen a happier queue than outside Roti King, a basement Malaysian kitchen right next to Euston station.
I was assured it would be worth the wait and I'm now a convert to their lunchtime rush. The atmosphere is filled with chatter, from suited workers to casual lunch diners. As far as food goes, it all tastes incredible and every item on the menu is within budget, from starters to lunch specials.
My recommendation for a light bite and what they're especially known for is their fabulous roti canai (£5.50) - soft, flaky, buttery flat breads with a choice of a rich curry with lamb, chicken or fish. "Unassuming in looks. Surprising in flavour” is how they describe their own restaurant and how to best describe the rotis too.
Another good option is their generous portion of nasi goreng - a plate of spicy stir-fried rice with seafood and chicken, and a slight taste of coconut from the oil it’s cooked in (£6.50).
Best bit? Get a take away box when you’re done and continue the party at home. Small confession, I dug into my bowl so hard I ended up spilling part of the contents onto my jeans. But not even that could ruin what was a terrific meal. Note - cash only and halal.
