Misato is a pretty authentic no-frills Japanese eatery in Chinatown, offering a selection of fresh sashimi and sushi as well as other Japanese classics like udon and soba noodles, teriyaki chicken and ginger pork. But we hear the rice dishes are where it's at.

This is the place to come for a human vs. food stand off, as the portions are about twice that of any neighbouring restaurant.

I mean, just look at the size of this pork cutlet in my katsu curry, with salad and a really nice homemade mayo dressing - gargantuan. The sauce is smooth and consistent in texture, with plenty of mild sweetness and spice. Also, it's yours for just £6.

Misato is always busy, with students, a lot of Asian clientèle, and those in the know - don't be surprised to see a queue snaking out the door. When I return, I'm going to try their pork ginger bento box, also £8. Pork stir-fried in a ginger sauce comes with rice, salad, two pieces of seafood dumplings, a salted prawn, two pieces of maki, edamame beans and a slice of fresh orange.  Sounds good to me.

This may well be the most affordable non-chain Japanese restaurant in London. Note - cash only.
