oyako don from ZEN Washoku

oyako don from ZEN Washoku

Described to me as the savoury Japanese version of a trifle, oyako don is a heavenly combination of rice, egg, chicken and a sort of sweet soy sauce.

Whilst the words "chicken trifle" won’t set the world alight, this bowl of rice from ZEN Washoku definitely will. Found inside my new favourite local haunt, Nag's Head Market, this small restaurant churns out incredibly good and simple Japanese food.
The oyako don is £6.90 at full price, with £1 knocked off during lunch hours (12pm to 2.30pm). This is a gut-filling and soul-warming dish, that absolutely hits the spot. Ask for extra rice if you want a bigger portion (free, of course), sit at the bar to watch the chef work, or settle in the small private booth just opposite his kitchen.
The rest of the menu is a triumph too, with sushi platters, hot dishes, and bento boxes, all at incredibly good prices, many of them £8 or under, especially at lunchtime.
This is one of those places I feel everyone needs to know about, thanks to their honest and very good food. I’d be happy to order practically anything off the menu. Note: limited seating, they do accept card, and they're also available for delivery and pick-up.
