BANKSIDE SE1 | WANDSWORTH SW18
Ekachai has been serving up South East Asian hawker food to Londoners since 1999, from their three existing sites in Liverpool Street, Wandsworth, and Selfridges.
They recently came onto our radar since opening a permanent stand in Flat Iron Square in Bankside. Here, the prices are noticeably cheaper, thanks to the casual indoor street-food-court set up. The portion sizes are still decent, and the decor and atmosphere aren't lacking either. It's worth hanging out by the open kitchen to watch the chefs work their hot woks over an open flame.
For maximum sustenance, go for the nasi goreng at £7.50; a steaming plate of Malaysian wok-fried rice with plenty of prawns, a serious helping of squid, egg, veg, cucumber, tomato, sambal chilli sauce, and Thai crackers. Comfort food with just the right amount of spice.
Delicious plates of pad thai and char kway teow are slightly smaller (and cheaper) - perhaps worth sharing with the nasi goreng. If you want to push the boat out, the scallop and prawn siu mai dumplings (£5 for 4 pieces) are superb. There's seating around the whole site, and plenty just opposite Ekachai itself.
Note: the nasi goreng also falls below our magic £8 mark at their Wandsworth branch, where a chicken version comes in at £7.80. But at the other two sites, it's over £8.
