The Artworks in Elephant and Castle is a creative work hub constructed from re-purposed shipping containers, also home to a few interesting and independent eateries, with the sort of price points we look for.

Top of this list has to be Marcel & Sons, serving home cooked Mauritian food, leaning towards Chinese Mauritian. I'd be happy to put a good wager on the dishes they serve here not being found anywhere else in London; I've certainly never come across them, and I'm half Mauritian.

The menu needs a little explaining for those new to the cuisine, and it's something owner Andy does with great enthusiasm and gusto. But the thing to get is the bol renverse (upside down bowl) - a hearty and gorgeous flavour bomb of chicken, shiitake mushrooms, choi sum, Mauritian sausage, crispy onions, chilli paste, sweet wine sauce and steamed rice, all topped with a fried egg, for just £5.

You can sit and eat inside their cosy restaurant space, or take it out into the courtyard to enjoy al fresco. Fantastic flavours with an unbeatable price tag. This part of town might be out of the way for some, but this dish alone makes the journey worth it.
