CLERKENWELL | WC1
This little weekday kitchen shop on Theobalds Road, rustles up loaded trays of succulent organic carvery roast meats each day, including pork, Norfolk chicken, and Dexter rump, that you can pair with their daily-changing vibrant salads (£5.75 to £6.95), or stuff into a sandwich or baguette (£4.95).
Their ethos is all about bringing variety to peoples' day, and proving there’s a lot more to lunch than a pre-packaged sandwich.
The staff are a friendly bunch, and if you can't decide on one meat, they'll give you a bit of all three. Same with the salads, of which there are many. I went for the large plate of hot special with salads (£6.95), which contained so much food, the plate couldn't quite contain it all. I even turned down some potato wedges for fear of wasting them. And I was almost defeated. Almost.
If you're not feeling meat, their other hot specials include pasta dishes or fish, and they're also open early in the morning for cheap and cheerful breakfast items. There's a fair few tables to sit inside if you wish, and eat-in prices are the same as their take away. If I worked close by, I'd be buying a box to take home for dinner most evenings, I reckon.
Note: contrary to what their website states, they are in fact only open until 4pm, rather than 7.30pm. The food starts to get packed away from about 3.30pm.
