SOUTH KENSINGTON | SW7
The affluent areas of South Kensington and Chelsea aren't the first that come to mind when searching for cheap eats in London. But Imperial College London can be found in these parts, and where there are hungry, cash-strapped students, there will always be places serving good food on the cheap.
One of these is local favourite Bosphorous Kebabs, a long and narrow hole-in-the-wall joint that's been knocking out tasty and fresh Turkish kebabs until late at night for decades. They have a handful of tables, and the walls are plastered with gushing customer notes, written by those visiting from as far away as Australia, and some dating back to the early 90's.
The thing they're particularly known for is their marinated chicken shish, but I only found that out after. I went for the lamb shish kofte, which comes in one size at £6.10. Great flavours, not greasy, a sprightly salad, a really good chilli sauce, a whole pitta, extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice on the tables, and I asked for a dollop of yoghurt too. A few of their dishes come in different sizes, up to an XL, and everything on the menu bar one is under £8. You can also add a range of vegetarian mezze as a topping for 80p. If I had spotted that when ordering, I would have got some dolma too.
I got chatting to the two guys behind me who work in the area; they said they eat there for lunch every day. Sentiments echoed by almost all of those customer notes. These guys are obviously doing something right. Note: cash only, and halal.
