VAUXHALL | SW9
Di Lieto is a family-run Italian bakery and café in Oval, just off Brixton Road. The locals love it, Italians love it, I love it.
Every day, they scribble down in marker pen some hot dishes they fancy making, and stick it to the till. And not in a hipster look-at-my-hand-written-menu kind of way.
Nothing is ever over £7 (so far) and the portions are normally pretty huge. They share pictures of their daily-changing menus on their Facebook page, if you'd like to know ahead of time what to expect.
Recent winners include pasta all'amatriciana (pancetta and tomatoes - pictured) and a particularly delicious pile of orechiette con cime di rape (turnip tops) and pancetta. But it's not all pasta - if you are lucky, you might find the likes of braised beef, porchetta, and swordfish, always at £7 or less.
What's the catch? It's not open for dinner or on Sundays, so get over there before 6pm, or 5pm on Saturdays, to get your fill of fantastic and affordable Italian fare.
P.S. Their freshly baked pastries tend to be around the £1 mark - go nuts.
