The restaurant at the Indian YMCA has been serving authentic curries to generations of young Indians studying in the UK for around 60 years.
A canteen-style dining hall reminiscent of colleges in India, it's open to anyone and is a favourite for those in the know looking for a good and frugal meal.
At lunch there are different meat curries and sides available between 12pm - 2pm, with prices that look like they're from the 70's (menu on their website). You get a tray, choose what you want from the counter, then go and take a seat.
I had a very good and spicy fish curry, dahi vada, lime pickle, rice and chapatti for £6.95, sitting with a mix of suited business folk on their lunch break and students from all different universities.
In the evenings and for weekend lunches, they have an £8 buffet with one meat curry (changes every day) and a load of sides. Breakfast is a £4 buffet. Value that's really difficult to beat in such a central location, in a lively atmosphere and with very pleasant staff.
