char siu pork on rice, Four Seasons Chinatown

char siu pork on rice, Four Seasons Chinatown

Four Seasons - the small chain of Chinese restaurants in London, famous for some of the best roast duck in town - probably needs little introduction.

But what we do urgently need to tell you, is that it's here you can eat a gorgeous plate of roast meat on rice, for just £7.80.

Your options are BBQ'd pork (char siu), crispy belly pork, soya chicken, roast duck, or barbecued spare ribs (some branches only). Some may find it unacceptable to order anything but the famed duck. But for the sake of variety, since my dining partner went for just that, I ordered the char siu, and had no regrets.

The pork itself was a fairly lean cut, served in a very generous portion, and glistening in a caramelised, sugary glaze. As is traditional, it had been marinated with ingredients like five spice, rice wine, hoisin, and soy sauce. The result, a deeply satisfying and rich mix of salty and sweet, soaked up by the bed of white rice and Chinese cabbage.

If you have loose change, you can upgrade your plate to a meat combo (add £1 for two meats, or £1.40 for three). Point to note, Four Seasons currently has three branches (two of them are next door to each other on Gerrard Street), just moments from each other in Chinatown, meaning you can hop on over to the next if the queues get long.
