Beirut Canteen is a solid Lebanese option south of the river - in a bright, roomy and nicely kitted out setting - offering plenty of tasty meals made fresh, to either eat in or take away.
I went for a dish for the garlic lovers: the charcoal-grilled boneless baby chicken, served with Lebanese vermicelli rice and salad. Beautifully charred on the outside yet juicy within, the chicken was also packed with flavour from its garlicky marinade. It was even more of a joy with the house sauces, which included a stonking Lebanese garlic paste made with heaps of the stuff.
The rice was pure comfort food; fluffy with pieces of toasted brown vermicelli pasta, all stirred with butter. The salad was bright and fresh, with pickled vegetables cutting nicely through the richness of the rice.
Other options below the £8 mark include their chicken shawarma (thin slices of marinated chicken) with rice and salad for £7.95; homemade falafel wraps from £3.95; or homemade burger meals, starting from £5.99 for a halloumi burger with fries and a drink.
