CHINATOWN | W1D
Cafe TPT is a well-known cheap eats establishment found in the heart of Chinatown, churning out a large menu of Cantonese, Singaporean and Malaysian classics, all at reasonable prices.
Their tasty roast meats are displayed hanging in the window, and it's a pretty good place to start. I tried their mixed option with rice to take away for £7, choosing two from the four meats available - crispy pork belly, roast duck, soya chicken, and honey roast pork.
The duck was juicy and salty, with a good ratio of crunchy brown skin to soft meat, and less fatty than many other versions I've tried in Chinatown. Just as enjoyable was their pork belly, cooked at a very high temperature to achieve a crunchy golden skin, with soft layers of belly fat and meat below.
A salty sweet soy glaze topped it off, seasoning the obligatory Chinese cabbage leaf and bed of rice beneath with both the flavour of the sauce and the rich juices from the roast meats.
If you want to eat in and stay under budget, go for a single roast meat (either of the two pork options, or the chicken) with rice for £8. The duck will set you back £8.50. Note: open until late, minimum card spend £10.
