HACKNEY | E9
House of Hackney is a buzzing spot creating vegan KFC-style magic, from gloriously juicy 'chicken' burgers, to buffalo hot wings, popcorn bites and mac and cheese.
It's all possible down to their clever use of seitan (wheat gluten), which has a very meaty texture, and is already a staple in many Asian mock-meat dishes.
I went for House of Hackney's spicy burger, which was a gloriously crispy fillet with cheese, slaw, jalapeños, hot sauce and chipotle mayo. This was a total flavour fest thanks to the juicy, super seasoned and peppery fillet - a totally satisfying lunch. Come hungry as portions are generous - and their perfectly fluffy french fries come in a mountain too.
Any junk-food loving human will enjoy themselves here, regardless of whether they generally eat meat (like myself) or not.
Other LCE options include the Temple Burger (crispy fillet, bacon, cheese, pickles, ranch mayo), the Twist Wrap (wings, salad, pepper mayo), or hot wings in spicy buffalo sauce with ranch mayo. Any main (they're a maximum of £6) can be made into a meal with the addition of fries and a drink, for another £2.
Note: There are a few seats outside, but none inside. Though a larger Camden site is opening in 2018.
