BRIXTON SW9 | CROYDON CR0
Amongst the knot of compact, independent and international eateries in Brixton Market, you'll find Brazilian restaurant Carioca, a staple there for some time.
You can now also find them in south London, where they've opened a second branch in the pumping new food and drink complex Boxpark Croydon.
The former is a little cafe-cum-Brazilian restaurant, with an injection of South American colours. The latter in Boxpark will serve your food in a take away box to enjoy at the vast communal seating (which quickly fills up on a busy night) in the centre of the food arena.
Prices and menus vary slightly at both branches - Brixton is a little dearer because you can eat in - yet almost the entire menu at both sites fall under our £8 mark. My pick of the bunch is the Copacabana Maize Muffin, an all-day breakfast item with a poached egg, pulled braised beef, fried plantain, and black bean stew, all arranged over a homemade maize muffin, with sour cream and rocket - £6.95 in Croydon, £7.50 in Brixton. Hearty and full of flavour.
If you want classic Brazilian, then you can't go wrong with their Feijoada. The country's national dish, it's a black bean and chorizo stew with pancetta, beef and lean pork, served with rice (£7 in Croydon, outside of our budget in Brixton), and Carioca do a fab version. But be sure to also add the traditional farofa (toasted cassava flour), collard greens and a spicy sauce for an extra £1.
It's also very worth noting, these guys do the best Caipirinhas I've had. Dangerous.
