COVENT GARDEN WC2 | MARYLEBONE W1 | SHOREDITCH EC1 | ST PAUL'S EC4
On The Bab in Covent Garden (they have three other locations too) is both a restaurant and drinking spot, serving up Korean street food and home-style classics, which people will happily queue for. So arrive off peak!.
I went for their bibimbab (£7.90) - white rice, colourful mixed vegetables, pickles and a fried egg, ready for mixing with the sweet and spicy gojuchang sauce on the table. As bibimbaps go, this one was simple and filling - and a perfect lining for all the soju on offer. Optional toppings include bulgogi beef, spicy pork, spicy chicken or spicy tuna (all +£2).
Don't skip On The Bab's moreish Korean fried chicken, which comes in four flavours: soy ginger, sweet spicy, garlic mayo or seasoned spring onion, all with crushed peanuts on top. On an LCE budget, you can get a small serving, £5.90 for five pieces, with rice for another £2. Although it doesn't have the twice-fried crunch of some fried chicken found in Korea, the flavours are punchy, the servings are really generous, and it's amongst the best I've found in London.
Other options to soak up the drinks include kimchi jjigae (kimchi and tofu stew in pork stock - £7), and soondubu jiggae (spicy seafood, tofu and egg stew - £7.50).
