CAMBERWELL | SE5
Camberwell is the London Cheap Eats gift that keeps on giving, with the likes of Silk Road, Theo's Pizzeria, and Wuli Wuli all within yards of one another. Time to add Maloko to that list, a peaceful vegan cafe and creperie with arty interiors, dishing out hearty gram and buckwheat galettes with a range of gluten-free and dairy-free fillings, at great prices.
The galettes themselves are traditional buckwheat savoury pancakes - gluten, wheat, egg and dairy-free. And the base is vegan, made from chickpeas, tahini, and fresh herbs. A simple cheese and chestnut mushroom galette is ludicrously cheap at £3.75, leaving you with the option to indulge in a sweet crepe (perhaps the apple, pear, cinnamon, coconut cream and granola option for £4).
But if I were you, I'd chuck an extra couple of quid in and go for the £5.75 Caribbean Twist - jerk tofu, sweet potato, mushroom and aubergine. Delicious, with a little jerk spice kick. All the galettes come with a salad of carrots, bean shoots, beetroot and spinach on the side too. Winner.
N.B. There's plenty of seating inside, and a small number of tables outside on the street, under cover-ish.
