GREENWICH | SE10
For quality British fare in the heart of Greenwich, Heap's Sausages hits the spot. A simple cafe-come-butcher, it serves over 10 types of handmade gourmet sausages, in meals, from £6.
I chose the all day breakfast plate: two sausages, dry-cured bacon, a fried egg, beans, mushroom ketchup, and toast. The best part is that you choose the stars of the show - anything from your classic Cumberland sausage, to more exotic options like the Toulouse (smokey bacon, herbs de provence), the Sweet Italian (red wine, garlic, fennel), or the Beef Guinness & Stout.
I've tried a few but always go back to the Lethal Lucifer, a pork blend laced with scotch bonnet chillies, adding incredible flavour and palatable heat. These snapped me back into life from the night before, and like everything else on the plate, tasted great.
Another option includes sausages with buttery mash and homemade onion gravy (£7.50 in / £6 take away). Under the £8 mark for take out are spicy lamb Merguez sausages with mash and tzatziki (£7). Or the Billingsgate Banger, a seafood sausage with parmesan, mash and croutons (£7). It's worth noting that some options come in meat-free versions too, showcasing their vegetarian sausages.
At Heap's, you can also buy various sausages, sausage rolls, and burger patties to cook at home. Heap's is in two Greenwich locations just moments from one another; the one on Nevada Street is open until later and has the full-sized shop.
