Mamuśka! is a friendly and great value Polish kitchen and bar, moments from Elephant and Castle tube station, with heaps of home-style comfort food under our £8 mark. On top of that, they have a daily-changing 'Special of the Day' for just £5 available all week, and a lunch deal where some main menu items are resized for midday appetites, and priced even lower (Mon-Fri, 12-4pm).
A huge fan of dumplings in any format, I went for 10 classic half-moon shaped stuffed pierogi, handmade on site. Mine were filled with braised minced pork for £7.50; other options include cheese, potato and onion for £7.90, or goat's cheese and spinach for £8. Topped with cream cheese and crispy bacon, these tasted great, and I plan to return to try out all the other fillings.
Other main menu options include lezco, a vegan stew made from mixed sweet bell peppers, veggies and smoked paprika for £7.50; and pork gulasz with pork meat, onion and gravy, served with potato for £7.80. There's also summer bigos - a light stew with cabbage, sausage and bacon for £7.50, and placki ziemniaczane - golden-brown grated potato stacks served with stew or sour cream for £7.50.
